I'm trying to gather facts on the importance of leaving a legacy,
which involves estate planning, wills, trusts, and family values. I
know it's out there somewhere, but I haven't found it, and could
benefit from some help. Lists are good, but I'm also looking for a
big picture. Thanks very much.

You have to explain what kind of an answer you want.

Is your question, why should i leave stuff to family/friends/charities
instead of spending it all when i'm alive?

Leave it all to me, please.

Questions: where are you based; how old are you; what family & other
possible beneficiaries are there; and their ages?????

And may I call you Dad?

(My natural Dad passed away many years ago.)

If you don't care who gets your money, then don't bother.

If you definitely want to make sure that certain people do /not/ get
your money, then it is worth writing a will.

Trusts are probably not of much interest to you, if they were, you
would know about them already.

If you don't leave a will, then you make it rather more complicated
for the person who has to clean up after you, and that increases the
pickings for lawyers.

Realistically, apart from trusts, it is pretty simple, your best bet
would be to go out and buy a paper guide on :-
a) making a will
b) sorting out an estate
