My HP computer came with a 60 day trial version of Office 2003. I do
not want the suite but I would use the Word and Excel viewer for
emailed word and excel documents. However when I try to open a word
or excel file, the process takes me to the trial version where I am
prompted to enter the serial number, which I do not have. I have
tried to uninstall from control panel, but the option to remove is not
listed. It actually shows an excel icon, but no button to remove.

Take a look at the following and let me know if this answers your question:

Microsoft Office 2003 Editions Trial Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I uninstall the trial from my computer if I decide not to
convert the software or I choose to purchase another Microsoft Office
2003 Edition?

A. It is not necessary to uninstall the trial if you choose not to
convert the software. However, if you choose to purchase another
Microsoft Office 2003 Edition (for example, Microsoft Office
Professional Edition 2003) then it is recommended to uninstall the
trial software prior to loading the software. To uninstall the trial,
you should follow these steps:

1. To open Add or Remove Programs, click Start, click Control Panel,
and then double-click Add or Remove Programs

2. Click Change or Remove Programs

3. Scroll down until you find Microsoft Office 2003. Please note that
there may be nothing in the Change or Remove Programs dialog box that
indicates that the program is a trial.

4. Click Microsoft Office 2003 and then click Remove, the program will
then run through the uninstall process.

Hi there,

Try these two things:
First, if the Office 2003 is listed in the Add/Remove program list,
click whatever button is available to you even if it doesn't say
remove. The next window that pops up may give you an option to
remove.

If not,
Second, there has been reported instances where trial versions of
Office that came with the computer shows up under Add/Remove Windows
Components. This option is available from the Add/Remove Programs
window (left hand side, big button menu).

If neither of these work, I can provide you instructions on how to
make the program of your choice the default viewer for word and excel
documents. If that is acceptable as an answer, please let me know.

Cheers,
Tox-ga

The control panel add/remove programs does not come with a button on
the Microsoft Office listing. It does on other programs. Clicking once
or twice has no effect. If I click on the Windows components it does
not list the office suite as an option.

Hi there,

Would you be interested in changing the default viewer to a program of
your choice as an answer? The trial will be on your computer but when
you open an excel or word document, it will use your Word/Excel viewer
instead of Office 2003.

Cheers,
Tox-ga

Temporary workaround is to right click on a file you want to open and
select "Open With..." then select the program you want to open
documents with. Note if you use any of the Office 2003 suite, this
means you have to have a registered version of the product.

Secondly, when you are in Add/Remove Programs, have you tried
selecting the Install option? I seem to recall an option to Install,
Repair AND Uninstall...

Although this really doesn't go with Office 2003, you could try
openoffice.org. Their programs will open Office files. And it's
completely free.
