Is there any research that addresses the question of how old is too
old for a child/teen to go trick or treating?

Don't they sort of decide this on their own? When I was 10 I decided I
was too old for the "silliness." Then at 13 I discovered the
shaving-cream-can-refitted-with-a-regular-sprayer-top thing and
started going out on Halloween again.

Sure, when the kid wants to be doing something else besides running
door to door gathering candy.
