Outline:

I need a list of readily downloadable software (WIN32) satisfying the
properties outlined in "Classifications" below, and the
following. The software found will hopefully be free, trial-ware, but
if necessary proprietary is okay too. By "update" I mean that the
software in question queries the internet for new versions (of
itself), either in part or in full, and installs them automatically.
This may constitute "material changes", or even small changes as
imperceptible as a security patch. I am specifically looking for
software displaying advertising, a la Zango, Pronto, AOL Instant
Messenger among any others. These may be flagged as adware by a
favorite AntiSpyware/Adware engine, or not. The updating may be as
minute as updating the local algorithm or database used to target the
advertising. However, if no examples fitting the advertising criteria
can be found, I am open to any examples. Lastly, the more popular,
the better.

Classifications
***************
1) "Silently Updated": The program does not notify user of the
auto-installing update (at either the download or the install stage).
There is no checkbox, window, nor upon initial install of this
software are there any kind of alerts
as to the autoupdate function. In short, neither notification nor consent.

2) "Notifying Updates": The program notifies user of autoupdate
functions, but does not require consent during the autoupdate stage.
For example, a Notifying program with an icon in the system tray, upon
updating, may have the icon spin or become highlighted or animated in
some way. Perhaps a window is displayed notifying the user of some
network activity regarding updates. These are not consensual, as they
do not allow user to disallow such activity, either at the initial
install stage, the autoupdate stage, or any other. Notification may
occur before, during, or after update function is completed, or even
discolosed in the EULA upon initial install.

3) "Consensual Updates" These are the easiest to find. Again, I
prefer advertising software. These are the most highly configurable
and highly disclosed of the three. Any kind of process asking the
user for permission to update qualifies as Consensual.

Final Remarks
**************
Supplemental results outlining some of the differences between these
types of programs are absolutely welcome. Any kind of literature
discussing these functions on a "higher level" and their implications
are indeed very relevant (I'm not interested in the "low-level" .NET
libraries making this programatically simple, etc). I am aware some
popular programs may, at one time or another in their version history,
have done all three of these. Any version information is helpful too.

Happy hunting and thanks!
