Question ID: 741703
I am currently running on windows 98 and am trying to upgrade to XP
Pro. During the upgrade I get the following message:

"File missing or corrupt
<Windows Root>\system 32\hal.dll.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file"

I've checked the web for possible solutions and found that the
Boot.ini file may need editing. I do not know how to do this or
whether this is the answer to my problem.

Can anyone help please.

In my experience, it would be a bad idea to upgrade 98 to XP - a clean
install would be best. If at all possible, do that, otherwise you'll
get errors like these forever.
