The author was referring to the Vietnam war, and I can only
paraphrase: "They're not really your friends, if they don't care, if
you spend the rest of your life stuck in a chair." I thought it was
MLK, but I couldn't find anything online.

I don't think I've ever heard or seen this quote before, and I haven't
found anything similar online. Where and approximately when did you
come across it?

I was living in NYC in the early 80's. I was in Times Square, I
forget what event was going on, but I heard this over a PA system, and
I always thought it was a recording from one of MLK's speeches, when
he was speaking out against the Vietnam war.

Gosh, the tone sounds more like Mr. Gregory. He was a powerful
speaker, once I heard him give a speech so powerful I wanted to go out
and kill whites, and I AM white myself. :)

Um, I think his name was Gregory, my memory isn't what it used to be
and it has been a long time. He said, they tell us to go to Viet Nam
and kill people we don't know for reasons we don't understand, but
they think we won't kill someone who rapes our mammys. That was his
general tone. Cool dude!
