Supermarket News has long covered the industry and annually publishes
their top list of retailers. "SN's Top 75 for 2002" has all of the
detail that you're seeking, as well as company sales, chief executives
and their percentages of the U.S. retail sales.
The top 25 account for more than 60% of the $682.3 billion in grocery
store sales. The list effectively separates groceries from dry goods
sales for its rankings. Supermarket News list also includes Canadian
companies and convenience stores, such as 7-Eleven.
For your analysis, knowing that there are 23,000 total outlets:
5 chains: more than 1500 locations; total stores = 14,092 (this
includes 5,800 7-Eleven convenience stores)
4 chains: 1000-1500 locations; total stores = 4,750
4 chains: 500-1000 locations; total stores = 2,582
28 chains 100-500 locations; total stores = 5,027
Balance: 2,349 stores in chains with less than 100 stores

Thank you for your response, but it is not entirely accurate. For
example, according to Kroger Foods annual report they have a total of
2418 stores, I don't know how many others have over 1500 in their
chains, but I would guess there are more than just Kroger.
Additionally, the source you quoted from Supermarket News even shows:
Kroger 2392 stores(slight descrepancy from their annual report)
Albertsons Food 2541 stores
Safeway 1759 stores
Could you possibly look again and provide the accurate data.
thank you very much.

Indeed, there are 4 supermarket chains with more than 1500 stores
according to Supermarket News, which would have compiled its list
early in 2002. The difference in numbers may just be timing in when
the annual report and SN survey was done:
Kroger: 2,392
Albertson's: 2,541
Safeway: 1,759
Ahold USA: 1,600
7-Eleven is included because Supermarket News determines what
consumable food products, as provided by supermarkets, account for in
the convenience store sales. In rechecking data, there are actually
only 5,302 7-11 stores in the U.S. -- which would CHANGE these
categories:
4 chains: more than 1500 locations; total stores = 8,292
* 7-Eleven (U.S.) = 5,032
Balance: 2,847 stores in chains with less than 100 stores
