I'm looking for crime data by date, zipcode/precinct, and category
(e.g. petty theft, homicide, etc), from as far back as at least
2001-present, for at least 2 major cities (or towns with an equivalent
population.) Preferably the information will be downloadable. The type
of information I'm looking for is on the web site
www.chicagocrime.org, but this site only has ~8 months of data.

Try the following sites, they may be able to help you:

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/dtdata.htm

http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/NACJD/

You may need MS-Excel, MS-Word, Adobe Acroread, or Winzip to view the
crime data from these sites.

Note: There may be legal restrictions on which crimes a civilian can
or can't lookup. There are a few criminal incidents not open for the
public to lookup, for all sorts of reasons pertaining to the law or
national security.
