Question ID: 743080
We have a home swimming pool and would like to change from using
chlorine to cleanse our pool to using an ozone generator. My questions
are:

1) Are ozone generators both effective and safe? And how do they
compare to chlorine use?

2) What type of ozone generator would be required to effectively
handle a 20,000 gallon pool?

3) Which companies that offer ozone generators are reputable and
trustworthy, and sell generators that are reputable and trustworthy?
We've seen a few fly-by-night companies offering what we initially
thought we wanted - we don't want to make that mistake again.

Thanks! I will be happy to add a significant tip to anyone who helps
us find what what we need.

According to this article

"Ozone has repeatedly been proven to purify and sanitize pool and
spa water faster and more effectively than traditional chemical method
 .."

Disandvanatage is higher cost:

Use of ozone as opposed to chlorine in swimming pools and spa is
gaining popularity worldwide. Unfortunately, the high cost of ozone
generators in the past has impeded its growth into the market.

         Advantages

Produces crystal clear water that smells fresh, feels softer
and is more refreshing
Dramatically improves the sanitation of the pool
Greatly reduces the need for harsh, costly chemicals
Eliminates eye and skin irritation and hair damage
	Saves maintenance, time and money
	Eliminates chemical odors
	Prolongs equipment life

 Several types and COMBINATION

The two basic types of ozone generators are ultraviolet (UV) and
corona discharge (CD). UV systems use a fluorescent light to create
ozone as the sun does above the earth. CD units use an electrical arc
inside a generator to create ozone as lightning does (the fresh smell
after a storm). Ozone is the most powerful oxidizer that can be used
in a pool or spa,

but in most cases, you will need to supplement with chlorine.

This list shows that most institutions around the world use combination
but some are ozone purified, with no chlorine

pricing (example)
.for pools up to 7,500 gallons.... $589

for pools up to 15,000 gallons.... $699

for pools up to and over 25,000 gallons.... $1232

.for New Pools up to 60,000 gallons $1097

Conclusions:

It is possible to have 'just ozone' purification, but you do need an
expert to design it.
Most system combine chlorine or bromine with ozonator

"When designed, sized, and installed correctly, ozone can be a very
powerful tool in water treatment systems. In the next few pages, you
will find a number of different ozone generation systems."

case study (combination)

This system has now been in operation for 15 years. The quality of
water produced has shown a striking change in color from green to dark
blue; and even though the pool is situated outdoors, algae control has
been excellent. This is attributed to the combination of ozone
destruction of algae spores followed by maintenance of 0.4 mg/l of
chlorine residual (ORP levels between 850 and 750 mV).

In conclusion, it is a complex issue. Most pool use combination, but there is
a growing number of pools which use just ozon solution. You need an
expert company to guide your selection of a specific solution. This
search shows the
general situation, different methods and trends.
