and UHF (ultra high frequency) bands, and usable reception is unlikely
to be obtained beyond about 50 kilometres from the transmitter. On the
other hand, short-wave broadcasts operate in the HF (high frequency)
band, where world-wide propagation is possible.
The best way for you to listen to Spanish language broadcasts may be
by internet radio. For example, a search of the Shoutcast directory
for the keyword "Spanish" shows 25 stations, several of which
emphasize "Spanish Talk" and have bit-rates low enough to be used even
without broadband:
