I am looking for as much information as possible regarding putting a manual transmission in a 1998 Honda Accord V6; Forum/message board postings, articles, etc. The swaps are done by using an Acura CL or Acura TL manual 6-speed transmission; (Honda did not sell accords with 6spd trans for that year) Postings talking about 99, 01, and 02 models are acceptable too, as they are all the same body style/engine/trans internally. Thanks |

This sounds like a job and a half. Replacing the Automatic tranmissiion with a Manual one, which means adding a clutch as well. Good Luck. |

Yep, it'll be a large job. I've found that the 2003 through current model year Accord, 2004 through current model year Acura TL 6-spd, and the Acura CL's, all use the same identical 6-speed transmission. The 2003 accord, which is the seventh generation accord, actually uses the same engine core as the 98-02's for the V6; it has upgraded exhaust, intake manifold/headers and so forth to give it the extra 40hp, the engine itself however, is the same. I'm eager to learn if the ECU/ECM of the 2003 accord would work in a 98-02 accord; that would make swapping a manual trans in the older accord much easier than making it work with the existing wiring harnesses. This is a project that others have completed succesfully in the past, it is no doubt an expensive and tedius one, but something that gives bragging rights I suppose, and a boost of personal confidence for being able to complete such a task. Not many 6-spd V6 accords on the roads. Less than two-dozen in the entire country, I'd say. I have a feeling I'll be answering my own question before a researcher provides the information I'm looking for. Dan |

i am looking to do the same thing also, there are complications, mostly wiring (speedo, reverse lockout, etc) v6performance.net has most info i believe. we're pretty diehard on that site, easier way would be to get the Dr.Evil auto tranny (race built) and set and forget it! no wiring headaches. although a member is developing a patch harness that'll hookup to the accord properly. we'll see soon enough... |

the 1998 accord V6 came with a J30A1 v6 engine. what you need to do is find another '98+ honda or acura car with that same engine but 6 speed trans in the junkyard. The parts you will need from a donor car include: the transmission itself the ECU from the donor car the shift linkage and shifter box the clutch master cylinder and resevoir from the firewall the pedal assembly with 3 pedals the piping for the hydraulic system that actuates the clutch the slave cylinder that actuates the clutch on the manual trans. you may also need the axles from the donor car, if the bell housing of the manual trans is a different shape. it really shouldnt be too difficult of you have done transmission work on a car before. you need to take the old trans out, bolt the new one up, remove the automatic linkage and replace it with the manual linkage. you need to remove the auto pedal rack and replace it with the manual pedal rack. you need to attach the clutch master cylinder by knocking out the factory plates, the the clutch master cylinder would have gone if it were in your car, and hook it up to your new pedal assembly. you then need to run a hydraulic line to the slave cylinder that is attached to the manual trans to actuate the clutch. you need to hook up the donor car shift linkage and run it to the interior of the car through the old autmatic hole. this might be the trickiest part, if the manual shift mechanism doesnt fit into the old auto hole well. it may require some fab to build. Hasport.com may have a shift box for the K-series engine that will work with the cable shift linkage your transmission will most likely have, or you can try to adapt the one from the donor car if it looks like it will fit. after that, you need to swap the ecu to prevent the "Auto trans Lockup solenoid" check engine light that you WILL have if you use the auto ECU. after that you have to bleed the hydraulic system to ensure that your hydraulic clutch system is seeing the pressure you need to engage and disengage a clutch. no doubt it will be a big job, but if you have about 3 days of downtime for your car, you should be alright. there is a place in colorado that would perform this swap for you, called PFI. you can find them at pfispeed.com. as a warning, if this is your daily driver, you may want to find another one until the project is finished, incase you run into any hiccups. the other option would be to trade in your accord for an accord that already has a 6 speed. good luck! |
