I've heard a story about a company that received the "Presidential
Environmental Award" (or something similar) and, in the same week, got
hit by fines for a routine environmental compliance finding. I've
looked through several sources to find anything related to this to no
avail. Are there any stories similar to this one that I could get some
info about (i.e. company name, when did this happen, what was the
complaince finding)?

I think that this may be Veolia Environmental in the UK. They were
awarded the Peel Cup in June, and the President your refer to would be
the President of the Chartered Institution of Waste Management.

More here about the Peel Cup at the Wastersblog of UK Waste Management
