I would like to know how sites like Slide.com and RockYou.com retrieve
pictures from MySpace.com to generate their picture slideshows.
MySpace is known for not offerring web service APIs... and the pages
with the picture galleries are password protected... how do the
slideshow websites get them?

I am not looking for code, but the description of a method that would
enable me to develop a similar feature that would be as fast and as
scalable.

You must sign up with Slide.com and provide them with your MySpace
password...this allows the software to create the slideshow.

That's not correct, you can specify any arbitrary URL and they are
able to retrieve the user's pictures.
