When I went to a theater camp in the 1980's, one of the groups
concluded their session with a song called "Hats Off" that ended with
the following line (or at least this is how I remember it):

"hats off to sunny saturdays/hats off to chocolate anything/hats off to
friends loyal and true/that's why I'm saying hat's off to you."

Over the years I have searched for it online, but after coming up with
nothing, I decided that it must have just been an oringinal song
written by the musical director of the camp. The other day, however, I
found 2 people quoting this song online (in blogs).

Can you find any information on this song?

If it's not an original song, it's likely from a VERY OLD musical...

p.s. There are other songs with this TITLE. It's the lyrics that are key.

What are the odds that an original song written at a summer camp would
have reached so many people? Here are sites that quote the lines I
mentioned:

http://bichonfriseusa.com/bfca/spec06/4a.htm (quotes the chocolate
anything line in a photo caption)

http://www.angelfire.com/apes/livesteak/eightisgreat.html (quotes the whole line)

Such clever lyrics point directly to Cole Porter.

Who else?

COle Porter??

Maybe it is this:

"Ziefert, Harriet. Hats Off for the Fourth of July.
A delightful parade book that keeps you wondering who will come next.
This rhythmic book is great for young audiences. Present as a
clothesline story. By the end of the story you'll have all the
paraders lined up in marching order. Play patriotic music and have
the children march along.
Interest Level: PreK - Grade 4" (sorry about that, Bryan ;)

I've looked at lots of songs that the lines are not from: Led Zep and
many more: "Hats off to Larry, Reba, Halford, Roy Harper, beer, ..."
There is a Hats Off country festival in Tamworth, NSW, but doffing
them for "chocolate anything" doesn't sound like that bunch.

If you think it could be from a very old musical, there is one; "Hats Off":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0027720/

but no lyrics.

myoarin-ga: the 1936 "Hats Off" musical you mentioned to was quite
amusing. It can be watched for free:

   Internet Archive - Hats Off

Unfortunately, it doesn't include the song being asked about.

Ah, now I recall the melody I was humming to the words: the
introductory song to "Cabaret" - Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome!

Okay, I don't guess the lines fit, but I am beginning to think the
words were original (cheap excuse for not finding them :)

Eiffel, glad the film was enjoyable, since you had to stick it out to
hear if the song occurred. Dedication!

I have spoken to Otel (Cole's illegitimate daughter who has recently
surfaced) and she tells me that for sure her father was the original
songsmith, as evidenced by her mother's unpublished diaries now in
Otel's possession.

Otel has promised to come and show me the diaries but, as she now only
has one leg following a riding accident, this may take a little time.

If there are any further questions, I shall be pleased to refer them to Otel.

My brother sang this in grade school (also in the 80's) I don't thing
it is an original song. Unfortunately, I have no idea who wrote it,
but I do know the first verse if it helps anyone:
Hats, they cover your head/For when it's cold outside to keep you warm
instead/And hats can say a whole lot/Not so much when they're on your
head as when they're not./That's why we say hats off to sunny
Saturdays/Hats off to chocolate anything/Hats off to friends loyal and
true/That's why we're taking our hats off to you.

I'll keep looking... :-)

Hats by Hank Beebe

Hats we're made for your head
For when it is cold outside to keep you warm instead
Hats can give you that style
And make you lift your chin up bursting with a smile
But hats can say a whole lot
Not so much when they're on your head as when they're not
Like when you say hats off to sunny Saturdays
Hats off to chocolate anything
Hats off to friends loyal and true
And that's why we're taking our hats off to you
Hats are brimming with fun
That's why on New Year's Eve you wear a funny one
And hats (the very same hats) can cover your hair (can cover your hair)
But they can mean more when you hold them in the air (Way up in the air)
Like when you say hats off to sunny Saturdays
Hats off to chocolate anything
Hats off to friends loyal and true
And that's why we're taking our hats off to you
