Question ID: 744247
I have an IBM laptop running Windows XP with an external Sony DVD
burner. I can watch a DVD using a decoder called PowerDVD. I am going
to be giving a lecture and I'd like to copy some short clips from some
DVD movies and incorporate them into my presentation. (I am virtually
certain there would be no copyright problems with what I'm planning on
doing.) The program I need has to be specific enough so I can identify
the precise moment when the clip should begin and end. In other
words, a particular "chapter" in a DVD movie might be 5 or 10 minutes
long, but I don't want the entire chapter (or "track" or whatever is
the term), but a specific scene (for example, one that may be only 2
minutes and 5 seconds of a much longer track). I am also operating on
a tight budget and therefore, while I'd like a good and user friendly
program, I can't afford to pay much for it. The important aspect of
this question is how to record a specific scene from a DVD movie onto
my computer hard disk, but if you could also clarify how I can drop
the recorded clip into a PowerPoint presentation, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks very much.

Technically possible, using free software.

Legally possible: Unlikely.

If you have permission from the copyright holder, proceed as follows.
Note: Phrases "in double quotes" refer to the software used (do a
Google search to find).

1) Use "DVD shrink" to copy the movie to the hard drive.

2) Use "Virtualdub mod" to open the VOB files created in step 1.

3) Delete all but the wanted footage, and save the wanted as an AVI file.

4) Use "AVI to VCD" to convert the AVI to an MPEG.

5) Delete all the VOB and AVI files.

6) Import MPEG into Powerpoint.
