Bren --

Good to see you using Google Answers so actively. This is a fairly
tough question, depending on the circumstances of the company. Some
strategies used have been:
*  acquisition
*  joint ventures
*  country-by-country and region-by-region strategies
* reverse acquisition (being acquired by a larger or better known
company, but having the smaller company's management run operations)
* sending home office personnel to start an operation
* hiring foreign-country nationals to start an operation
* using e-commerce as a way to circumvent "traditional" distribution
(see Amazon.com)
* acquiring distribution channels (Ingram, a major book and software
distributor pursued this path in Europe)
*  licensing product for sale
* franchising (as McDonalds did in Europe initially)
* set up a venture investment operation (Softbank has acquired major
U.S. operations this way)

It would help researchers to have more focus in the question.

Best regards,
