In 1973, a division of TRW contracted with the Federal EPA, to find
the most toxic and hazardous sites in the U.S. They came up wilth a
list, which finally became the original "superfund" list of 100 sites,
2 per state. The author was R.S. Ottinger, et al. It is NOT a 16
volume document that I keep finding by him, but rather another elusive
report with the most toxic sites per state. The Palos Verdes Landfill
was on this first list from CA. Help find this report by TRW from
1973; it may also be in the Federal Docket of 1973.

ponemah-ga,

I checked the holdings of the EPA libraries and dockets for all
reports by either Ottinger, TRW, or reports dealing with hazardous
waste sites.

There is nothing listed that meets your description.

Can you tell me anything more about the report? Where did you come
across mention of it? Is there a formal citation? How do you know
it's not the 16-volume report that you're looking for?

Any additional information would be helpful. Meantime, I'll continue searching.

Is it:

"Recommended methods of reduction, neutralization, recovery or
disposal of hazardous waste," R.S. Ottinger, 1973

bowler-ga,

Thanks for the effort, but you appear to have cited the 16-volume set
that the question specifically says is not the item of interest.

Keep looking, though, and let us know if anything else turns up.

I haven't been able to locate the document. I found an EPA press
release from 1981 that mentions the origins of the original Superfund
list, but no mention of this report.

http://www.epa.gov/history/topics/cercla/05.htm

My guess is that the report is some internal report. Perhaps a call
or email to the EPA is worth a try. If it is an internal report then
they may be the only source. The report is not housed with any other
government documents apparently.
