I am asking on behalf of a friend from the Ukraine who needs to find the best solution to her problem marriage. She met her husband through an Internet dating site and after several visits from him agreed that she and her young daughter would come to his home in Chicago on a fiancée visa. He treated her very badly from the start and often locked her in the apartment. She had little money and even less options. She ran away on one occasion, but he found her and brought her back. As the three month deadline approached for the end of the visa, she had to decide on whether to stay or return to the Ukraine. With the thought of her daughter?s future as the primary factor and a hope that things may improve she married this man. However things immediately got worse and after 10 days she had to borrow the money from a friend in the Ukraine (a small fortune for them) and purchased two tickets to return back home. She has been back in the Ukraine and separated from this man for just over one year and wishes to put this experience behind her. She has no interest in returning to the USA or pursuing a green card and does not want anything from this man. All she requires now is a fast and clean solution to this nightmare. Unfortunately he will not accept that it is over and will not co-operate in any proceedings. What are the options for a quick divorce if he will stand in her way? Can she get an annulment or a quick divorce in another state or country that will be recognised internationally? Are there grounds for an annulment? What are the likely costs to all the options? |

This is just a guess, but it stands to reason that your friend could file for divorce in Ukraine. This seems the easiest and cheapest recourse. At the least, she might contact a Ukrainian law firm. The names of four can be found at these sites: http://www.helplinelaw.com/lawyers/ukraine and http://www.hierosgamos.org/hg/db_lawfirms.asp?action=search&subcategory=Divorce&country=Ukraine |
