Our firm is researching India's largest private companies (by sales).
We would like to know whether this information is already available.
Are there any any existing league tables? They could be published by
business newspapers, research agencies or chamber of commerces.
We are keen to receive either the rankings themselves, if they are
publicly available, or the web links to the information providers, in
case their access is restricted.
What do we mean by PRIVATE companies?
Firms that are not listed on stock markets. They may beliong to
families, entrepreneurs, or private equity and venture capital
funds.They may also be cooperatives.
We are looking for the top 500 firms in terms of sales (we don't want
start-ups, local businesses etc.).
We include all sectors (retail, IT, manufacturing, insurance, etc).
If you find rankings and/or information on sectors (such as the top
retail companies or teh top high-tech firms), we are also interested
in gathering this information since some of the companies mentioned in
these sector-specific rankings may be included in our top 500
all-sectors league table of private Indian companies. |

A surprisingly difficult question! India doesn't seem to have any
equivalent to a Fortune 1000 list from what I can see.
I'll continue looking, and certainly will let you know if I come up
with anything. But in the mean time, a question...
Many of India's larger non-listed companies are foreign subsidiaries
-- Coca Cola, Kellogg's, etc. Do these count for purposes of your
list?

I did manage to find a list of about the 600 largest companies in
India, but there's no easy way that I can see to separate out the
public from private companies.
The companies are ranked by revenue, although the actual revenue
numbers are not provided.
Here are the first 100 companies on the list, so you can get an idea
of what the full list looks like:

Hello!
My fellow Researcher pafalafa has done a good job in gathering the
list of companies, but the list contains "Public Limited" companies,
the ones that are listed on Stock Exchange. The question is about
Private Limited Companies, (Pvt. Ltd. Cos.)
It is not easy and may be not entirely possible to compile a
comprehensive list of revenues of Pvt. Ltd. Cos. since by law they are
not bound to disclose the P & L statements to public. After the spate
of financial scams during the last decade (like Enron, securities
scam, mostly involving Pvt. Ltd. Cos.) the government and industry
regulatory bodies are working on laws and regulations for making the
financial information of such companies more transparent.
As pointed by pafalafa, there is very little information available
online about Pvt. Ltd. Cos. During a preliminary research I came
across a few sources which may help in drilling down to the required
information.
You may find the article "THE BW REAL 500: Private Limited Companies"
from Business World (a popular biz. magazine. of India) useful.
"...In India, as in many other parts of the globe, there is one set of
rules for widely-held outfits and another for those privately held.
While both types have to file their financial documents - profit and
loss (P&L) statement, balance-sheet, auditor's report - with the RoC,
as per Section 220, Sub-section 1 of the Companies Act, 1956, only
company shareholders are allowed to see (or obtain copies of) a
private company's P&L statement. Only their balance-sheet is
accessible to the public. (For publicly-held companies, both the P&L
and the balance-sheet are accessible.)"

The above article was the cover story of the magazine in Nov. 2003.
The data is old, however, you can get a general insight into the
rankings of the Pvt. Ltd. Cos.
Regarding your question, I will look further in any business magazine:
usually the magazines Business World, Business India & Dataquest
feature such research. There is also a paid-report of Top 500
companies ?2004 edition of Dun & Bradstreet?s ?India?s Top 500

If you are not interested in paid research papers/books, I can compile
a list of Pvt. Ltd. companies' revenues by filtering them from the
General List of Top companies; however, I don't think that getting the
list of 500 would be possible.
Another option would be to contact Business World & Business India
magazines, I feel that they might have covered more on this topic.
