Unless you already have worked lined up or know of definite work don't
count on getting part time work.

The Australian Government is "encouraging" people on single parent
payments to seek part time (at least 15 hours a week) work. Or part
time study.

The demand for part time work will be greater than ever.

This takes effect from 1st July 2007. (Penalties for not working that is)

Enjoy your holiday

Cheers

Cheers Aussie, one more thing - i will be arriving in November , with
about £2600 in tow, in your opinion is this sufficient for a couple of
months holiday without work? It works out as about $6300 australian...

Hi Ollie,

Depends on how much of Australia you want to see.

Where are you starting from in Australia?
Have you checked out your accommodation options yet (availability)?
Accommodation costs will be a major factor and travel costs around Australia.

Do you have any sort of itinerary?

As November/December is the start of school holidays, and I think
"Schoolies" week is usually in November, your accommodation should be
your first concern.

Cheers

If you are on a tight budget... my advice is take a tent... it means
you have a good home anywhere (except dangerous areas of cities)! It
is a piece of piss to hitch and in no time you would be able to meet
people... you should be able to find work picking fruit or bar work
etc. it won't pay too much but if you watch the pennies and live a
cheap life it is enough. Remember... travel light, don't be wasteful
speak to everyone possible and show everyone RESPECT you will be
great. I spent 7 months in asia on less than £2000.

Enjoy Australia,
Matt

Hi, thanks Matt for the advice, i plan to get some barwork when i'm
out there - and staying with family for a bit so will be saving money
then. Hi Aussie, i don't have an itenery as yet - i will be planning
to go to Brisbane at some point ( I'm landing in Sydney on the 4th),
prob stay in Sydney for New Year. The max cash i'll be taking will be
around £2400 so i reckon that's about $5800. A substantial amount? A
big thanks to everyone so far for the advice, it has been extremely
helpful!!

Having family here will be a huge help.

Where are they at? I am guessing Brisbane. aka Brisvegas.

you'll spend 335$(us) a weak on
# accommodation
# food
# clothing
# entertainment
# transport
# international and domestic travel
# telephone
# incidental costs
that converts to about 146 pounds
if you'll stay for six months you'll spend 146*26=3796 pounds.i think
you should take minimum 3700 pounds cuz you cant expect a realy high
salary in australia . australia is much cheaper than uk (i thought
you're in uk cux you said gbp)

£134 a week?!?!? U can get by on half that in the uk!!! I'll be
staying with family for quite a while, they are indeed in Brisbane,
near the gold coast so no worries there!! Realistically i'll be
landing with around six thousand dollars (aus) in the bank, i think
that is plenty enough. Any more thoughts welcome, thanks again for all
your comments!

I was in Queensland, around the Gold Coast, in March.

Australia Zoo is defineately worth a look.
Don't forget to go to Movie World, Dream World, Sea World and Wet'n'Wild.

Schoolies on the Gold Coast is a huge event as well.
I have seen it on the News in Perth, Western Australia.

Check out the cheapest form of travel between towns and states.
Consider buses and trains.

And if you do come to Perth there is an English Themed Pub - Elephant
and Wheelbarrow in Northbridge. It is a good night out there.

Cheers
