Please see my #711535, with current comment appended to the bottom of
the thread. I can't believe that nobody but me has ever experienced
this, no matter what my husband says about my special powers for
breaking software.
Thank you,

When this happens does your computer make any noise, either when this
starts or continually until you exit? Like a ding, chirp, or buzz?
Do you type quickly?
Have you ever used any of the "Accessibily" options in windows that
have to do with the keyboard?

Thanks for tackling this, gregaw-ga. I hope you can help.
Noise: nope, nothing. Nothing other than the usual low whirring hum.
I type pretty quickly. Because my nails are long, I sometimes strike
keys above the one I'm aiming for. In this case the shift key may
have been involved, and the hyphen or something near it probably was.
I have on several occasions tried key combinations near what I think I
was typing when the phenomenon occurred, attempting to reproduce the
error, but have never succeeded.
I type rapidly, but also clumsily and not by touch, so I make tons of
errors and spend a lot of time correcting. What this means is that my
sense of what I was typing at the time may not be very reliable.
Also, my eyes are usually on the keyboard and not on the screen, so I
see the problem when I look up and can't be sure when it started (and
hence what triggered it).
I don't know what "Accessibil[it]y" options you mean.

What anti virus software are you using? Have you thought that it could be a virus?
If you are using Symantec / Norton I would suggest getting a different Anti Virus.

No, keystroke, nice try, but sorry, that can't be it.
This phenomenon has occurred on my work computers both at my present
job (IBM Thinkpad, sometimes used as a laptop and sometimes docked
with a separate keyboard) and at my previous job (Macintosh and
Gateway PC). It has happened on my personal laptop (Dell) and my
current and past desktops at home (three or more, various
manufacturers). This means I have had it happen on at least 8
different computer keyboards over a period of maybe 15 years, and
always, consistently, when I am touching nothing but the keyboard. It
has happened under nearly as many different security and protection
systems as there have been computers.
(I do not think I ever had it happen on my husband's old TRS-80 or Kaypro.)
Because of the apparent ubiquitous potential for the error, I simply
cannot believe this never happens to anyone but me, no matter how
special my touch might be.
The last time it happened, shortly after posting this query, I was
typing the words "rather than" very fast, but my nails were long and
may have struck more than one key simultaneously. What the screen
showed then was "rathern," suggesting that the missing "tha"
combination may have been involved in the problem. My best hypothesis
is that a simultaneous keyboard combination of some kind causes the
equivalent of a down-arrow lock to occur. But I haven't been able to
reproduce it. (There is no guarantee that I hit the actual keys I was
aiming at.)
Meanwhile, all virus detection programs turn up zip.
My husband and sons are all about 6.2 times as tech-savvy as I am, and
they are stumped.

Yikes! And whatever it is, it's reversible, because I just hit
something on my work laptop keyboard that causes nonstop scrolling UP.
First time for that one, but I should have known the potential was
there all along. I need help!!
