I have spent several years building a song collection on my computer,
and many man-hours rating each song. Now that my hard drive is getting
full, I have transfered my songs to a new hard drive. Media Player has
found these songs, but most of them do are not rated - the rating I
had given the songs is not applied to the same songs in their new
location...

FACTS
------

- All songs currently exist on the original drive, wih ratings intact
- All songs have been copied to the new drive, but only a few have
copied their rating
- At a time prior to copying songs to the new hard drive, I went to
Tools/Options/Library and checked "Maintain my star ratings as global
ratings in my media files"
- Only the songs that I have rated since doing that have kept their
ratings on the new hard drive

What I Want
------------

I want/need to transfer my songs, with their ratings, to my new hard
drive. My guess is that the solution is something like:

- knowing a hidden or system file to copy and move to the new hard
drive - a file that golds the ratings
- a fix that will "Maintain my star ratings as global ratings" retroactively

I can't believe that such a natural occurence (likes to rate songs,
needs bigger hard drive, never figured the default setting regarding
maintaining ratings needed chainging) has caused me so much grief!

"Maintain my star ratings as global
ratings in my media files"

When you did this on the old drive did you leave WMP open for a long
time? The process works in the background and can take awhile before
the information is truly 'maintainable'.

Also, it would be helpful to the researchers if you would identify
which version of WMP you are using.

It seems to have good ratings but the people that have left comments
are the negative ones.

I found the WMP media database that maintains this data, it is:
C:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Media Player\CurrentDatabase_[###].wmdb

However it also maintains data on the file locations, so as you've
moved them, it will not be able to make the corelation between old
location and rating and new location and rating.

There could be some method to alter the filepaths used to regain your ratings.

Hope that is some help.
