Question ID: 746715
Does anyone know how to convert the old Microsoft Works (.wps) files
to Word? I got Microsoft Works free with my computer and have been
using that word processor. When I upgraded my computer I no longer
had it. I now use OpenOffice Writer which reads MS Word files. It
does not read .wps files that I can see.

I need to convert the old
Microsoft Works with the .wps extention to Word. Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi jphighfill,

Here's another possibility -

Word Viewer 2003

Will look forward to your reply,

Hi,

Do any of the methods described on this site work for you?
http://userful.com/support/ms-works

It is targeted a users of a network-appliance application, however the
word processor in that application is OpenOffice.

I was able to do it. I used the Word Viewer 2003 suggested by Hummer.
When I tried Word Viewer 2003, I found that it basically just let's
you view the document; you cannot save it as a Word document. Then I
had the idea of viewing the document, then selecting the entire text,
and Copy and Paste the text into OpenOffice Writer. This worked for
me. I looked at the converter but they wanted to charge $25.00. I
only have a few documents to convert, so doing a Copy and Paste with
Word Viewer 2003 should work okay for me.

Thanks to everybody who responded. All the information was helpful.

Of course, with the Open Source software and Open Document Format
(ODF), we will have less of this sort of problem in the future. Long
live Open Source and Open Document Format. Who needs Microsoft?

Note the first software only converts to these versions of DOC

DOC (Word 2.x for Windows, Word 3.x-5.x for MS-DOS, Word 6.0 for MS-DOS)

The second link is a Word Viewer that will convert TO WPS.

On that page however there is a link:

The Works 6.0 Converter converts word processor documents created in
Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other versions of Works.
Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and
Word 2002, 2000, and 97 on machines running Microsoft Windows® 98,
2000 Professional, Millennium Edition, and XP.

Wish the question was 'How do I view' rather than 'How do I convert'
ah well...only 5 minutes of my life ;)
