Question ID: 746733
would someone explain to me the actual difference between the term
'internet' and the term 'world wide web'?

I have heard that the internet is a subset of the world wide web. if
the internet is "a network of computer networks", then what is the
world wide web?

Hi timespacette-ga,

The 'internet' is the network on which the World Wide Web exists. It
is, as you rightly said, "a network of computer networks."

The World Wide Web is a specific service available over the internet.
Other such services include (but are not limited to) email,
newsgroups, FTP, peer-to-peer file transfer and many others.

The web is basically a euphemism for 'http' (HyperText Transfer
Protocol), the service which essentially handles the transfer of HTML
documents.

However the terms now are often used interchangably and most people
when they think of the internet simply think of the web.

so it's not correct to say that the internet is within the world wide
web, but that the world wide web, as a service that provides html
documents, functions over the internet, yes?

That's pretty much it.

The internet is the overall network in which the 'web' exists.

I once read that the "Internet" (capital I) is the logical network
(services, etc.) and the "internet" (small i) is the pyhsical network
(cables, hosts, etc.).

Just a bit of useless trivia... Verify before using!
