Approximately how many travel professionals are there in the world?
(agents, tour operators, ticket consolidators, etc). A good estimate
is all I need.

Is this useful?

"The tourism industry is providing 255 million jobs worldwide, almost
7 out of 100 people are working in the tourism industries. Thus
tourism is the biggest employer worldwide and forecasts predict that
jobs in the tourism industries will have the highest growth rates from
all industries."

This is not really what I am looking for. Tourism industry could
include a janitor in a hotel. I really need to get closer to the
number of individual travel agents in the world.

Hi Bobby,

Problem is that these aren't really referencable items. One is from
product marketing material and the other one (the first one) is so
vague, its not clear whether we're talking about 1 million or 20
million. This is definitely worth something but would you mind doing
some more digging?

Thanks,

Jason

Dear Jason,

To get an idea of the number of travel agents worldwide:

800,000 travel agents worldwide

What are the Global Distribution Systems (GDS)?

?The GDS are the Sabre, WorldSpan, Amadeus, and Galileo Global Distribution
Systems. These systems reach more than 800,000 travel agents worldwide and more
than 50 million consumers who visit such popular travel sites that are
powered by a GDS such as Travelocity and Trip.com!?

?The Global Booking Network markets and sells your inventory in
real-time through more than 3,000 popular consumer travel sites of the
WorldRes, Pegasus, and BookingCenter Networks and through more than
800,000 travel agents worldwide using the Sabre, WorldSpan, Amadeus,
and Galileo Global Distribution Systems (GDS).?

Global Booking Network FAQ

?For simple and easy global distribution, BookingCenter connects your
current rates, availability, and content to over 3,100 travel networks
and websites such as the WorldRes, Yellow Pages, the Sabre, WorldSpan,
Amadeus, and Galileo GDS?s (Global Distribution Systems) used by over
800,000 travel agents around the world.?
http://www.bookingcenter.com/faq.html

500,000 travel agents operating worldwide

?The GDS sector arose in the 1960s as a means for airlines to keep
track of their schedules, seat availability, and prices. Formed by
airline leaders such as American (which founded Sabre), the GDSs were
installed in travel agencies in the 1970s, marking one of the first
successful business-to-business e-commerce ventures. A few decades
later, e-commerce travel sites like Expedia and Travelocity, using
Sabre and other GDS systems as their information engines, made travel
booking available to the masses -- at least those with a computer and
decent Internet access. In addition, the more than 500,000 travel
agents operating worldwide now have a wealth of electronic methods to
plug into and shop from.?

This is a lot better. Possible to find out what % of the market GDS
holds so I can see how many agents there are globally? We're getting
close! Thanks for the continued help.

From looking at the link, I believe the 255 million figure mentioned
in the clarification includes a much wider range of jobs than those
listed in the question.
For instance: hotels, restaurants, transportation, entertainment,
etc. (Chart 1 - Characteristic Tourism Industries).

   Have a good day.
