I need to know from the most detailed and reliable data point
obtainable what the relationship is between parents who drink and how
it affects the likelihood of the children being drinkers as well. I
would like to know statistical increases like at the age of 18 a male
who was raised in a home where the parents drank has a___________
percent chance of becoming a drinker over the same child raised in a
nondrinking house.

If you are going to copy and paste all whole bunch of data please try
to keep it relative to the subject question.

I assume you're asking about problem drinking that can readily lead to
alcoholism (there are very few households that are "nondrinking" in
the sense that no one ever has a drop of alcohol).

If you had some other sort of drinking in mind, please let me know by
posting a clarification.

Thanks.

Gapgapgap,

Please download the following study.
http://www.phc.bris.ac.uk/phcdb/pubpdf/pubs/365.pdf

Take a look at table 1 on page 3.
"Alcohol consumption by adolescents of parents with and without
alcohol problems."

Does the information in this study answer your question or do you need
additional material?

Bobbie7

Hi Again, yes it was my intent to look at the rates where there was a
problem drinker in the house.

gapgapgap,

Thanks for the clarification, but --did you look at the study that
bobbie7 provided above? It seems to be exactly what you asked for, and
she would like to know if you looked at it, and if so, does it answer
your question?

I don't know a lot of drinkers (3, actually) but do know quite a few
dry alcoholics. Every one of them say one or both of their parents
drank to excess. This is not to say there is a 100% chance of
offspring of drinkers being drinkers 'cuz I have a terrific friend
won't touch the stuff (neither will her siblings) and her father was
an alcoholic much of his life. Finally, and old school chum is a
raging alcoholic and his parents never drank, though his maternal
grandfather died of alcoholism some 25 years before his birth. The
other two drinkers are both children of drinkers.

My parents were heavy drinkers. I saw my mother hugging the toilet so
often, it turned me completely off of alcohol. I have had, perhaps 6
alcoholic drinks in my lifetime, and I'm 53 now. I detest being around
drunks.

two brothers both were alcoholics..3 children in each family..the kids
in one are all alcoholics, the kids in the other are almost teetotal
or non-drinkers.
I think the mother or other parent plays a factor too....as if both
drink, then maybe its in the genes...

In this case one mother teetotal, and other society drinker..who gave
up as she aged.

Its more in the genes of the person than the environment in my
opinion...and experience
