Dear puzzle-ga
This is an interesting one as there are two sources.
According to the Daily Mirror newspaper it was Ken Dodd following his
aquittal having been defended by Carman.
Daily Mirror December 22nd 1999

The People Newspaper states it was the comedian Jasper Carrott.
The People 11 March 2001.

I would go for the first as I seem to recall it at the time.
Neither papers are available unless they are accessed through a pay
site.

Incidentally, I found a similar comment on OJ Simpson's attorney.

Do not hesitate to ask for clarification of any part of this research.
