For a US-based GAR, please. I had lunch today with a guy who's 17-year-old grandson has been hospitalised in Corfu whilst on holiday ... This has made me think about my younger daughter who is off to Florida next month. She will be swimming with Dolphins and visiting Disneyland; and hiring a car, etc., etc. Is there anything special that we should obtain cover for? And who would you recommend as a reliable insurer? Many thanks! Bryan | |

Bryan - Just for clarification: when you say "swimming with Dolphins" are you referring to our flippered ocean friends or the Miami Dolphins American football team? This might influence the insurance coverage you'd be seeking... |

pbp-ga, Not sure exactly what you have in mind, but... --most US health insurance policies that I'm familiar with have provisions for covering the insured when they are away from home, or even out of the country. Check to see if your gal is similarly covered. --many credit cards (again, from my US point of view) automatically offer free insurance for rental cars. This is a valuable benefit, as getting insurance through the rental car agency can double the cost of the car -- it's an amazing ripoff. --there are also "trip insurance" policies that will reimburse travellers for a 'lost' vacation due to illness, weather, etc, but I'm not too familiar with these. Florida is a real blast, with or without Dolphins (flippered or otherwise). Your girl will have a good, safe time of things, I'm sure. Dave |

Yes, you should check out existing insurance policies. Some have a slight premium addition for emergency hospitalization and return home. It doesn't happen often, so the premium is very reasonable. I can get coverage for one euro with a call to one of the church-related aid services my wife donates to (the German Knights of Malta, Knights of St. John). And do check out the rental car insurance coverage if she has a visa or mastercard. You/she will probably need clarification. The information in the fine print is not so easy to understand. And she should watch out for those dolphins, you know, they are natural, warm-blood Americans. My niece did that once and said it was great experience. Whoops, that shouldn't be misunderstood. ;.) (Hmm, I guess I've got a stopped up nose, maybe from a right cross from PB. |
