The job youre referring to is for Visa Assistant. The reason I know
this is because my daughter was interested in this job a few months
ago in the U.S. Embassy in Chile and I still have a copy of the job
announcement for this opening.
The most important aspects of the job description and requirements are
as follows:
The Embassy has a job opening for a Visa Assistant position in the
Consular Section, commencing ASAP. This position reports to the
Supervisory Visa Foreign Service National. Will also report to the
Consul and Consul General.
Who May Apply: a) National Mission employees b) Chilean citizen
Residents; and c) Resident American citizen or individual with the
required work permit for employment.
NOTE: All non-citizen applicants must have the required work and/or
residency permits to be eligible for consideration.
Major Duties:
-Communicates directly with the public by telephone, personal
interview, and e-mail.
-Assists U.S. citizens, including adopting parents going through court
proceedings, and others dealing with the Chilean legal system, by
explaining local laws and legal procedures.
-Contacts attorneys for case status reports.
-Serves as point of contact with attorneys, police and judges
regarding ACS cases.
-Researches Chilean laws and prepares legal opinions as requested by
the Consular Officer.
-Processes immigrant visa cases; is responsible for maintaining IV
case files; reviews cases received from the National Visa Center;
reviews cases for completeness and recommends cases for issuance or
further interview.
-Exercises considerable judgement applying complex immigration laws
and procedures to a wide variety of cases.
Reviews evidence for lost/stolen residence claims and prepares
transportation letters.
-Conducts anti-fraud inquiries as instructed by Consular Officer.
-Prescreens supporting documentation for adoption cases. Reviews
incoming correspondence and drafts responses in English or Spanish as
appropriate.
-Drafts replies to congressional correspondence.
-Prescreens nonimmigrant visa cases and makes recommendations to issue
or refuse.
Desired Qualifications:
-Law Degree and license to practice law in Chile.
-One or more years of experience in legal practice.
-Fluent oral and written English and Spanish language skills are
required.
-Must have Journeyman level knowledge of Chilean law and practice.
-Computer skills, basic knowledge of Word and Excel are required.
Must possess excellent customer service skills.
