I am looking for a WWII movie, I don't know if it is B&W, I don't know
who is in it. All I know is this. There are no battle scenes, it all
takes place behind the lines. It is the story of one everyman soldier
who becomes, along with us, cynical about the war. There is one scene
where he and his squad are forced to kill a pole in a firing squad,
there is another scene where the men are in a french cafe and some
american soldiers come in looking for blacks, they use some racist
language, gigaboos maybe, to beat up. They come off seeming very
unheroic. I don't know much else. It is a movie my father has talked
about and he can't remember the name but I wanted to find it for him
for his 80th birthday. Please let me know if that is enough to go on.

I believe your movie may be Carl Foreman's 1964 film "The Victors."
This is a black-and-white movie about World War II which contains a
firing squad scene and a racial incident in a bar. Most of the movie
involves the activities of American soldiers off the battlefield,
interacting with European civilians and with each other.

You might read through the comments here and see if anything rings a bell:

Please let me know if this is the correct movie.
