This was a good question and as someone who has never been married in
New York it wasn?t just a case of quickly looking at my marriage
certificate. :)
In the city of New York there seems to be two different types of
marriage certificate.
The general use certificate is known as the BASIC or SHORT certificate
which can be seen via this link

This is generally used in the New York State marriage database. As you
can see from the image this certificate DOES NOT display if you were
married previously to this union.
If you are looking to ?export your marriage? to another state or
country or due to religious reasons the religion you are a member of
require additional information as to your current marriage you will be
required to obtain a certificate known as the EXTENDED certificate
which can be seen via this link

which, as you can see, DOES show the number of marriages you have had
before BUT does not display to whom.

What is the difference between a "short" and "extended" marriage certificate?
States:
"Today, upon receipt of a properly completed marriage license by the
Office of the City Clerk a Certificate of Marriage Registration or
marriage certificate which is printed on light blue colored safety
paper is issued to the couple. That is a product of the computerized
age. Prior to that, certificates were typed out. Under law a completed
photo-copy of the marriage license certified by the City Clerk is also
a legal marriage certificate. So a marriage certificate can take two
forms. Typically, marriages occurring between 1995 to present are in
our computerized data base and a request for such record will result
in a marriage certificate of the kind first described above. Other
certificates may take that form or will be photo-copied completed
licenses certified by the City Clerk. In addition, the law provides
that, unless otherwise stated, upon request a basic marriage
certificate will be provided to a proper party. Upon request in
writing, the man or woman can request a so-called extended version,
which contains additional facts such as parents' and marriage
officiant's name, place of ceremony, etc. Typically an extended
certificate is used by churches who wish to see if a prior religious
ceremony was performed and in instances where a couple is having both
a religious and a civil marriage ceremony or by foreign jurisdictions
in connection with adoptions, passports, dual citizenships and the
like. The extended marriage certificate for religious use costs $15.
However the extended for foreign use costs $35."
On a related topic although something that is a little aside from your
initial question
Q. Can I find out if someone is married by inquiring at the City Clerk's Office?
A. Certain persons, namely, a spouse or a spouse-to-be, can legally
inquire about the prior marital history of their spouse or intended
spouse. Members of the general public may not. After the person makes
the request, supplies enough information to conduct the search and
pays the required fee ($5) the Office of the City Clerk will confirm
the fact of a prior marriage to such person with a "No" or a "Yes"
answer only. No records will be provided.
If you need any other help with this subject or clarification, let me
know and I'll be glad to assist you.
