Hi vrl,

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) publishes
the ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OF CANADIAN FACULTIES OF MEDICINE each
year, the 2006 edition being the most recent. In it you will find alot
of useful information, including minimum GPAs and Success Rates (for
local provincal residents, other Canadians, and foreign students).
I've copied a bit below (I hope the formatting comes out ok) but
please click on the link to get a more accurate picture for your
particular situation because so much depends on your country/province
of residence. That said, the University of British Columbia has the
lowest minimum requirement for GPA (2.8) with an average success rate
of 18.6% (admits Canadian residents only). Again, these figures are
dependent on where you reside, your greatest chance of success is
within your own province of residence.

General Information
"There are seventeen faculties of medicine in Canada that offer
programs of study leading to the award of the MD degree which is the
first professional degree in medicine. The faculties of medicine are
listed in a geographic sequence going from east to west which implies
no rank ordering whatsoever.
The number of places available is determined by provincial governments
based on educational and financial resources as well as Canada?s
future physician workforce requirement. Since the universities are
under provincial jurisdiction, the majority of places in a faculty of
medicine are allocated to permanent residents of the province in which
the university is located.
Provided academic prerequisites have been met, the type of
undergraduate degree earned or program followed should not deter
filing an application. Also, whether or not the previous institution
attended has a faculty of medicine does not affect the chance of
admission.
An applicant must decide to which faculty or faculties of medicine
application will be made. Obviously, the geographic location of a
faculty of medicine is of critical importance to a prospective
applicant. For those applicants who are free to move to any location
where a place may be offered, chances of success in gaining admission
may be considerably enhanced. Those who apply to only one faculty of
medicine have the smallest chance of being offered admission. As the
number of applications increases, so does the chance of being offered
a place at a faculty of medicine.
The competition to enter a faculty of medicine is very keen so it is
important that applicants ensure that they fully meet the entry
requirements of each faculty of medicine to which they apply. N ot
only should applicants plan to meet all academic prerequisites, it is
also important to respect all deadline dates. In general, an
application or documentation is ignored when received after deadline
dates. Those who wish to maximize their chances of gaining admission
to a Canadian faculty of medicine should consider the following:
! Since residence is considered in admissions, include the faculty of
medicin located in your home province amongst those to which
applications are submitted.
! If you are resident in a province with more than one faculty of
medicine (Québec, Ontario or Alberta), try to apply to more than one
faculty of medicine in the province. Remember that some faculties of
medicine have far more places to allocate than others.
! Some applicants are definite about a particular faculty of medicine
and make only one application. In a situation of keen com petition,
the determ ination to enter a particular faculty of medicine may be
tantamount to excluding oneself from the study of medicine
altogether."

First off, I'd like your definition of 'success rate'. I will need a
bit of clarification on this question, but I like your work.

Does the success rate indicated somebody who has been offered an
interview, passed the interview and offered admission?
Or does the success rate reflect the number of people that have been
offered admission -after- already having been granted an interview?

I'd also like an actual listing of the schools that are easiest to get
into, from easiest to hardest or something similar.
ps the association of candian medical schools in canada is almost
exactly the kind of site i'm looking for, nice find.

Good morning, vrl,

"First off, I'd like your definition of 'success rate'."

According to the AFMC publication:

"Success Rate: Percentage of applicants who received at least one
offer of admission whether subsequently registered, declined or
deferred.

"Does the success rate indicated somebody who has been offered an
interview, passed the interview and offered admission?
Or does the success rate reflect the number of people that have been
offered admission -after- already having been granted an interview?"

The success rate is the percentage of successful applicants, out of
all who applied, who have been offered admission.

"I'd also like an actual listing of the schools that are easiest to
get into, from easiest to hardest or something similar."

In order to sort them for you, I will need to know from whose point of
view? An international student or a Canadian? If Canadian, from which
province?

Regards,
hummer

1. In terms of sorting order, I am a Canadian, resident of Manitoba.

2. I have one additional question for you that you may be able to
help me out with after seeing all this data an information:

The only way to be a resident of a province is to either (a)have lived
there for 2 years prior to entry into the faculty of medicine, and (b)
to have a graduated from high school from that province. If I move to
another province and live there for 2 years prior to entry into
medicine, and I graduated from high school in Manitoba, would I be
considered a resident of both provinces?

ps. I am going to rate your answer the highest possible rating.

Clarification of Answer by hummer-ga on 02 Aug 2006 08:28 PDT
Hi vrl,

I've sorted the list using the AFMC info and assumed a person would
qualify as a resident of the province, but you'll really need to go to
each university that interests you for more details.

Good luck - I hope everything works out for you,
hummer

1) MCGILL UNIVERSITY - MD,CM Program
Minimum GPA: 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
Success Rate: prov. residents: 2004/2005: 69.2

2) UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA
Minimum GPA: 3.60 on a 4.50 scale.
Success Rate: prov. residents: 2004/2005: 37.9%

"If I move to another province and live there for 2 years prior to
entry into medicine, and I graduated from high school in Manitoba,
would I be considered a resident of both provinces?"

The answer for Manitoba is "Yes". The rule is, "(a) must have
graduated from a high school in Manitoba OR (b) must have lived
continuously in Manitoba for at least two years immediately".
For other provinces, you'll have to check the rules for admission of
the universities of the province where you are living at the time.

What is the criterion for applying as a Manitoba resident?
"Permanent Residents or Canadian citizens who wish to apply as a
Manitoba resident: (a) must have graduated from a high school in
Manitoba or (b) must have lived continuously in Manitoba for at least
two years immediately prior to entry to the Faculty of Medicine."
Who is likely to be offered an interview?
"Manitoba residents who meet the minimum AGPA of 3.6 and a minimum
operational MCAT score of 8 (minimum 7 in each of the four components)
are invited for an interview. Out-of-Province applicants usually have
an AGPA minimum of 3.9 and MCAT of 10.5 or above to be offered an
interview. These criteria are determined each year on the basis of the
applicant pool."
