i heard this song only once, 1972, on a car radio while driving in
germany. the singer was a male. i don't know the title. starting
lyrics (i think): "i showed her most of tennessee, twas all i could
afford, i even thought of stealing so that i could show her more, but
she never did seem happy and she often seemed to say, i like it here,
i like it here but i love montego bay." this is probably not
completely correct but it's all i remember. thank you.

Hello Stan2304-ga and thanks for your question.

The song you’re referring to is called “Montego Bay” written by Hank
Cochran and co-writer Glenn Martin. The artist, Merle Haggard
performed this song in his album “Portrait of Merle Haggard.”
For copyright reasons I can’t copy the lyrics, but you can see them at
this website:
http://www.luma-electronic.cz/lp/h/Hag/hag_portrait.htm

It seems that Jack Greene performed “Montego Bay” as well in his album
“Statue of a Fool”.
http://www.luma-electronic.cz/lp/g/Greene/greene_statue.htm

Both albums are from 1969 so the performer could be either Merle
Haggard or Jack Greene.

In this short biography of Hank Cochrane it says that the artist that
sang “Montego Bay” is Merle Haggard.

The tape “Statue of a Fool” which includes “Montego Bay” is available
for online purchase at the CD Now Website.

Search Criteria:

"I showed her most of Tennessee"

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,
Bobbie7-ga
