I have Word 2004 for Mac. I have a long document in which I have
inserted a number of endnotes. Upon insertion of the endnotes I
specified Autonumber beginning at 1. However, I noticed today that
there are several "gaps" in the numbers - endnotes skip from 4 to 6,
for example. I tried:
a. Reinserting a new bogus endnote in-between 4 & 6, and while the new
note is (correctly) numbered 5, the next note is now
numbered 7, leaving the gap there.
b. Changing all of the endnotes to footnotes and then back again. The gaps remain.

I don't want to go back and re-insert 49 footnotes to get the number
correct. How can I re-number the footnotes so that they are correct?
I already have (and had when they were inserted) autonumber selected.

Thank you.
