I want to delete some menu items from a GNOME menu on the RedHat EL WS
4 desktop. I recently installed the rpms for OpenOffice 2.0. The
installation process added new menu items for OpenOffice.org 2.0 Calc,
etc., to the GNOME menu Applications > Office. So far, so good. Now I
want to remove the menu items for the old OpenOffice applications
(OpenOffice.org Calc, etc.) But I can't find a way to remove menu
items from GNOME menus.
The GNOME documentation discusses two methods:
1. Right-click > "Remove This Item". (This action is disabled, even for root.)
2. Point Nautilus to applications:/// (This also fails with a message about "The
disk is read-only".)
Although I can find the .menu and .desktop files for the menu entries,
I can't find anything that defines the contents of the Office menu
anywhere in the file system, including under ~/.config,
/etc/xdg/menus, /usr/share/applnk, etc.
I'll accept any answer that removes the old OpenOffice menu items,
whether it involves using a documented technique (e.g., making
applications:/// writable) or hacking the GNOME or RedHat config
files.
Thanks,
