The average weight of Americans has increased over the last 30 years.
I want to know the average weight of a passenger on major US airlines
over this time period (annual data) and the calculated increase in
jet fuel use because of this increased weight.

Have you tried speaking directly to AA to see if they can give you the information?

I doubt that Alcoholics Anonymous would be of much assistance. :-P

(Irony: I've just returned from the bar.)

These sites may help:
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/05/13/1052591790259.html
http://www.livescience.com/humanbiology/obesity_airlines_041105.html
http://www.ainonline.com/publications/RAA/RAA_04/raa_arcweighsp8.html

WHile these sites agree in mentioning an increase of 10 lb per
passenger, I note that the last one speaks of "passenger weight with
carry-on baggage". Those laptops add up, as does perhaps the weight
of other carry-on baggage as more passengers avoid checking baggage.
This site also mentions a relatively greater increase in women's
weight (hold off, girls!), but they are certainly carrying more
laptops than they used to.

Even in Russia, they are talking about the problem:

This is about marine vessels, but the weight problem is the same:

Somewhere in the above, there is also mention of the additional fuel required.
