Dear scorps-ga,

Hoax? Yes.
How is it done? These sites will assist you.

?And how is it done? His www.circlemakers.org Web site, which has been
logging a quarter of a million hits daily, offers a how-to guide
suggesting designs and equipment (surveyor's tape, planks, garden
rollers, hangers). According to his recommended method, the center is
formed via an awkward one-man dance that has the circle maker pivoting
on one foot while the other foot flattens the surrounding stalks.
Surveyor's tape is then attached to a stick stuck into the center of
the newly formed central circle. The circle makers decide on a radius
length and then, keeping the tape taut, walk around the stick, leaving
a slight trail with their feet. Voila! A perfectly made circle. All
that's left is to stomp the formation into shape.?

Crop Circles ... or just Crap Circles.
http://www.amtsgym-sdbg.dk/as/crop/ufofake.HTM

?In 1991, more than a decade after the phenomena began, two men, Doug
Bower and Dave Chorley, revealed that they had been making crop
circles in England since 1978 using planks, rope, hats and wire as
their only tools. Many other people around the world are also openly
making crop circles, notably Circlemakers.org. Although the commonly
accepted view today is that crop circles are a man-made phenomenon,
paranormal explanations, often including UFOs, are still popular.?

Typical websearch answer - and all wrong: the CIA and MI6 supported
subterfuge to explain a public phenomenon they cannot deal with.
They are made by non-terrestrial beings using high-powered laser beams
to flatten the stalks. Perfect circles and supplementary patterns are
no problem for the guidance systems of their laser cannons.
The beings are not threatening, just having fun. Obviously, if they
wanted to really stir things up on earth, they have the means to do
so, but they are so superior to humans that they look on earthlings as
though they were colonies of ants and termites, just harmlessly
enjoying their confusion wherever they have made a new crop circle.

The CIA and MI6 usually spot the circles from satellites before the
locals discover them (all that laser beaming calls attention to them
even in the dark). To maintain their subterfuge, they immediately
send agents from the FBI or MI5 to trample around a bit and leave
footprints and auto tracks.

I suspect that Answerfinder (ex Scotland Yard) probably knows a couple
of agents that have been involved, but doesn't know that they have
been - or isn't telling us.

"I eat them for breakfast every morning . . ."

The ad for that would read, "Crop Circles: The breakfast cereal
made from real crops."

That's a revealing comment! The CIA & MI6 are both concerned with
non-domestic operations - I wonder where their field officers are
based?

My non-terrestrials are "non-domestic", fair game for MI6 and CIA.
But being squeeky clean agencies, they don't do anything within the
country.
That's why they call in the FBI and MI5 to muddy things up.
Here in Germany, the CIA-equivalent "Bundesnachrichtendienst" (BND)
probably isn't so particular, since it has to depend on 16 different
state police forces - and probably doesn't trust 'em. (The BND has
just had a scandal about spying on domestic journalists. :)

myoarin may have given you the answer you hoped for. Clearly many crop
circles are hoax, but several percent may be as myroar said. Another
popular explanation is the ET are sending us messages via crop
circles, but I have seen no believable translations. 4th and 5th
explanations are less believable, so myoarin gets my vote. Neil
