Question ID: 750654
Since I am NOT an administrator of a work computer. Is there a way to
install software to a zip drive or DVD without having to install any
files to the registry? I would like to be able to use a product like
photoshop, etc...but have it installed to my zip drive. If that is not
an option. Is there any way to make a stand alone application work off
a DVD? Have the application and all pertinent files on a DVD where
this would work from the DVD , just like it was installed on the main
drive?

drcwks...

Generally speaking, complex programs such as Photoshop create and
require registry entries in order to run in Windows, whether from
the hard drive, a DVD or an external drive.

There are standalone programs which are designed to to write any
entries to the registry, and these could run from a zip drive or
a DVD...the trick is finding one that fills your needs. I can
think of an image viewer that would work as a standalone, but
when it comes to image editors like Photoshop, I think this would
be difficult, if not impossible, to find.

Let me know where this takes you...

That should read: "There are standalone programs which are designed
NOT to write any entries to the registry..."

To add to the above, there are also Linux "Live" cds which are
essentially complete operating systems that boot and run off of a DVD,
with no interaction with the hard drive. The problem with that is
that you can't SAVE anything to the hard drive with such a setup.

My best recommendation would be to buy one of the IT guys at your
office a beer after work and try to talk him into loading PShop on
your machine.
