Because my Direcway equipment is old, it has a USB connection into my laptop. So after reading some on the NETGEAR Support, it sounds like I need to make the Netgear WPN834 an Access Point. I have connected the PC directly to a LAN port with an Ethernet cable. Instructions say to log in to the router using 192.168.1.1 (I am successful) Go to the Lan IP Menu and disable DHCP (This always makes the connection Limited and I can't log in once I do this.) I have been able to change the router IP address to 192.168.1.99 I can then log into the router using 192.168.1.99 (as long as I don't disable DHCP. This configuration somewhat seems to work. I can ping the router from the laptop connected to the router & from a wireless laptop. I just can't get a web page from the wireless laptop. I am only semi-literate when it comes to this stuff. Are there any other ways to make this Netgear WPN834 available to any wireless laptop in my home? I can send screen prints if someone wants to see what IPCONFIG yields. Things that confuse me..... (You don't need to answer all this, it just shows my confusion) Firewall on/off. I've tried it both ways. The wizard seems to fail because the router does not seem to see the Direcway Satellite Connection??? It seems to see it when you start the wizard but when all the disconnects/reconnects complete, it does not see the Satellite. WAN Network Driver - Disabled or Enabled (Does it matter?) Right now I have it disabled. I have a 10/100 LAN connection enabled (I think this is the hook to the router) One client sees an Internet Gateway as soon as the wireless connection is active??? That same laptop also sees this Internet Gateway if it is hooked to the router. Should the computer using this router have an Internet Gateway in addition to the Direcway Satellite Connection? Will wireless clients still ask for Access point (Infrastructure)? I assume a client will not use the proxy (for Direcway)??? This testing is being done with 2 Laptops (Dell Inspiron & IBM A31) http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101227.asp (MAC Spoofing) Is this relevant??? |

The netgear router will NOT become an access point simply by connecting your computer to it. You'll need to setup your laptop with internet connection sharing. Here's what you need to do: 1) Manually set the IP address of your own computer: a) Go to control panel->network connections->right-click local area connection, click properties. b) Double-click Internet protocol TCP/IP c) set ip address = 192.168.1.100, subnet = 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.100 dns leave blank 2) Go to the router, leave the IP address of the router as 192.168.1.1 and DISABLE DHCP on the router. since you've manually set your own IP address, you should now be able to still ping the router 3) Go back to network connections in the control panel. You should have an entry for Direcway. Right click it->properies. 4) Click the advanced tab 5) Check the box saying "allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection" That should do it. |

Thank you for responding. I had sort of given up that anyone was going to answer so had not checked for a couple of days. I will go one step at a time since I have tried some of your suggestions but probably not exactly as you state. a) There is a LAC (10/100 Controller) connects when I connect the router) There is a LAC2 (WAN which always seems to be connected) Which one of the above will I do your step c) on? Another question, does it matter if the Wireless connection for my computer is on or off while I am doing this setup? Another question, I assume I leave Direcway Satellite Connection alone as far as TCPIP address, subnet, and gateway? I believe the IP Address is a proxy. I don't understand proxy, I just think I have heard that 10.80.18.81 is a proxy. Is that okay for the IP Address? |

The following 2 are both on the router. I have guessed many things for the Internet Port but nothing seems to work. 1) Internet Port MAC Address 00:0b:7d:1c:51:30 IP Address 192.168.1.2 DHCP FixedIP IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Domain Name Server 192.168.1.1 2) LAN Port MAC Address 00:14:6C:D4:C4:88 IP Address 192.168.1.1 DHCP OFF IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 |

I thank you for your assistance and I did finally get a message that I 'successfully installed the Netgear router'. So far no visitor laptops have been able to connect to the router. I would be glad to tip if additional information can be given to help me with the Laptop#2 connection. All other information is FYI. --Router-- Wizard Basic Settings: Staic IP Address: 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 (Gateway) DNS: 192.168.1.1 Wizard LAN TCP/IP Setup: 192.168.1.1 (IP Address) 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.2 Starting IP Address 192.168.1.254 Ending IP --Laptop#1-- WAN: 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.100 (Gateway) DNS Blank Wireless Connection: 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 (Gateway) 10/100 Integrated Controller Disabled Direcway.com (Shared) 10.80.18.81 255.255.255.0 205.177.62.57 (Gateway) --Laptop#2 (Visitor)-- Now has an Internet Gateway but it says ?not available? There is a service setting that I don?t know if/how to set: IP of the computer hosting: ??? External Port (TCP or UDP) ??? Internal Port (TCP or UDP) ??? Wireless Connection: (Guessed at this) 192.168.1.101 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 (Gateway) |

Okay, I am happy that you gave me the answer. I had trouble figuring out that step 5 (sharing the internet connection) was done through the Wireless connection. IPCONFIG ended up showing the Wireless connection as 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 I kept trying to set the IP address behind the wireless connection and that was not necessary. My visitor is able to connect to the internet with no special settings. Happy day. It only took me a month to get this working! |
