URGENT: We have new cash registers that are computerised. The message we are getting on setup is: ?Computer does not have a hard disc your hard disc is not functioning? AND ?Cannot create a temporary directory if you have HPFS or NTFS installed on hard drive you will need to set up an MSDOS boot partition to set up windows? The cash register system is a Keycorp K42 till / printer with Microsoft Windows operating system. We need you to address hardware & software issues specifically. Could it be the hard drive itself malfunctioning? Also, what kind of hard drive does this cash register use? I consider myself with an advance knowledge with computer system, but I am stumped when it comes to setting up a computerised cash register system. Thanks for your help! Generous tip will be offered for anyone who can guide me with a clear and concise step-by-step process. Cheers! | |

This is actually a very straight-forward problem to fix. You are indeed correct that the message you received indicates a failed hard drive. Your other hardware should be intact given the boot-up process gets far enough to report the mount error (i.e. could not find the OS partition to boot from). Your old hard drive may or may not be OK. To err on the side of caution we'll assume that it is not. To get up and running again quickly, open your computer and pull out the hard drive. Take it to your local computer store and purchase a new one (doesn't have to be the same brand or size, just the same style--IDE). Install the new hard drive as follows: http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-hard-drive.htm#install-new-hard-drive Next, re-install your Windows 98 and then re-install your cash register program. You can recover your files from the crashed drive later for free using Ubuntu: http://jclark.org/weblog/Miscellany/Tech/ubrescue.html Or if that doesn't work there are plenty of (non-free) data recovery services: http://www.drivecrash.com/ I hope that helps. In this case it looks like Windows 98 bit the dust. You could try re-installing Windows on your hard drive, but not garuntee it won't wipe out your data. Good luck, and let me know if you get stuck along the way. All the best, -Tyler |

I would tread carefully with the above help, tyler7 gave a very good walk through for problems with PCs and hard drive issues but in your case this is not directly a PC but a cash register so the steps to replace the harddrive may well be different a long with the reinstallation process of windows and any relavant software. Speak directly to Keycorp (or the people you purchased the units from) and see what they can advise, let us know here and we can direct you accordingly. --Keystroke-ga |

Good point. Sorry, I misread that as just a PC with 98. In this case, yea you might have trouble finding a replacement harddrive without contacting the company directly. You could try eBay though if the company is slow to respond. Regards, -Tyler |
