Dear hans1-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. The
process for enlisting in the US Army is a relatively simple one. You
merely meet with your local recruiter, determine your qualifications,
take an academic exam to determine your qualifications, and complete a
physical exam to determine your medical fitness.

Following that your recruiter will assist you in selecting a job specialty.

In some cases, depending on the job you select and the enlistment
period you agree to, you will be able to choose an assignment that you
will be guaranteed for a specified period of time (usually at least
1-3 years depending on the needs of the military and the terms of your
contract).

Keep in mind that some specialties and duty stations come with
bonuses. This is a special, one-time cash reward some soldiers receive
for selecting certain jobs and locations. Some soldiers receive up to
$40,000 for enlistments of three or more years and the Army College
Fund, which provides up to $71,424 for college.

any questions about my research please post a clarification request
prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your
final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the
near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

Keep in mind recruiters are slightly more honest than lawyers and used
car salesman, and slightly less than real estate agents and auto
mechanics.

For recruiters that are reading this, I will translate using small
words: you ain't got a good rep-yoo-tay-shun.

I trust the few recruiters (who read) that come across this will take
it with the humour it is intended. My wife's few months as a recruiter
were the most rewarding time she spent in the military, comparable to
being at Andersonville or Point Lookout during the Civil War.

And remember that you need a translator for enlistment promises. For
example "auto repairs in S. Korea" is translated as "mine disposal in
Afghanistan"
