My wife and I have a hearing scheduled to finalize our divorce in
Rowan County, with me as the plaintiff. This is an uncontested
divorce, and we've already filed a separation agreement we prepared
using Legal Zoom that spells out all issues. The question: must my
wife, as the defendant, be present for the hearing? She'd prefer not
to go but we don't want her to get into trouble with the court by not
showing.

Please look at Rule #9 in this document:

http://www.nccourts.org/courts/crs/policies/localrules/documents/185.pdf
19-C JUDICIAL DISTRICT ? ROWAN COUNTY
COURT RULES AND CASE MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR
CALENDARING CIVIL CASES IN SUPERIOR COURT

which states that both parties must be present for a pre-trial hearing
in certain divorce proceedings.

According to the Marshall & Taylor Law Firm of Raleigh, NC a proxy may
stand for a party in a divorce proceeding or a summary judgement
motion can be filed to convey the absent party's testimony:

"The North Carolina General Statutes state that all material
allegations in the Divorce complaint are deemed to be denied by the
Defendant. Thus, one of the parties must appear before the Judge for a
testimonial divorce, or a summary judgment motion can be filed which
allows a party, or usually an attorney for the party to appear before
the Judge to present the documents and obtain the divorce on behalf of
the Plaintiff."
