Is it legal to donate music to musicians?

It seems that sending money to musicians should be fair-game, but I'm
looking to do this on a large, organized scale.
I'm concerned that contracts with artists' record labels would forbid
this kind of behavior.
Any inside knowledge of recording contracts would likely help here..
