This is commonly called Max VO2. (Note: I did find one place that does
VO2 SubMax, but this is very different and not what I'm looking for.)
It is generally done on a treadmill
with a special device over your mouth to do some special measurement.
I did find some self-service ways of doing it, but they are somewhat
dangerous. The best way is to find a clinic/service experienced in
doing this under supervision.

I'm located in the San Jose area, but am willing to do an hour or so
of travel to get it done.

Hello gotnet-ga,

I?ve found several places where you can get the VO2 MAX test in the
San Francisco Bay Area.

My research shows that some health clubs offer this service to their
members and may have someone on staff or available to come in to give
you the test. If you have a health club membership I suggest that you
ask them whether they offer this service or if they have a reciprocal
agreement with the health club I found. Club One has 11 locations in
Northern California several of which are in the San Jose area.

VO2 Max Testing -- VO2 MAX/PEAK
VO2 is the rate of oxygen uptake, or consumption, measured during
exercise. VO2max, the maximum rate of oxygen uptake, is the ultimate
measure of fitness and is reported in milliliters of oxygen per
kilogram of body weight per minute or ml/Kg/min. To achieve a high VO2
max, a person must have a fit heart and lungs, and significant lean,
conditioned muscle mass. VO2 can be used as a measure of the success
of your training program.

Cost: $140/member, $160/non-member
Tests are performed by appointment only.

I also found some personal coaches and sports training organization
that provide VO2 MAX testing. They would be a good bet if you don?t
want to have to hassle with memberships and commitment to specific
programs.

Your cheapest options might be to get tested at one of the local
colleges or universities. San Francisco State University offers this
service to the general public. You might want to contact other schools
closer to you to see what they have. One drawback might be the lack of
convenient scheduling around the academic calendar.

SFSU offers fitness testing for better living

Popular with athletes and fitness fanatics, these tests and various
services are available to anyone. For $15 to $45, students, faculty
and general staff can find out their body composition (body fat
percentage), assess their cardiovascular fitness and tailor workout
routines and eating habits for overall results. The tests are also
open to the general public for slightly higher fees.

In addition to body fat percentage tests, the lab offers VO2 max
testing, which gauges the heart's fitness.

These fitness tests are available singly or in packages. For
appointments, call the lab at (415) 338-1399. The lab is located in
the gym, room 111.

In addition, any hospital that does cardiac testing could provide you
with this test. You might want to check with your health plan to see
if they would cover this service.

It seems you have lots of options. Good luck with your fitness program.
