Where can I get a list of most major cities in the world and their GMT
offset and daylight savings time information. It should not be simply
a list of time zones that are linked to a major city. It should
include most big cities in the world. Inclusion of the country name
is also greatly preferred. |

Hi zero_mile_club,
Please take a look at the following sites and let me know if they suit
your purposes:
Greenwich Mean Time
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/
Taking Lebanon as an example, click on the map of Asia.
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/asia/
Then click Lebanon:
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/asia/lebanon/
Then Lebanon Time:
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/asia/lebanon/time.htm
Here's the information provided:
Eastern European Time (EET)
Standard Time = GMT+2
Summer Time = GMT+3
Clocks on Daylight Saving / Summer Time
from 01:00 GMT 27 March 2005
until 01:00 GMT 30 October 2005
Another example - France:
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/europe/european-union/france/
The major cities of France are listed on the left. Clicking on each
will give you the specific time data for that city.
========================
Here are more sites that may fit your needs:
The World Clock - Time Zones
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
World Time Server

Hi Rainbow-ga.
1.) I am looking for a database. By database, I mean a list in one
format or other but with all of the information in one place easy to
read. Not a website that must be navigated to get the information
from many different pages.
2.) http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com has good info, but bad format.
http://time_zone.tripod.com/ has good format (all 1 page) but bad data
(No DST. Only countries, not cities.)

After further research, I haven't been able to locate exactly what you
want. The closest I have come is the following site that fits your
criteria except no cities:
http://www.freesearching.com/zip_codes_intl.htm
Not what you want but I wanted to show you this interesting site:

Best regards,

zmc-ga,
Are you looking for a database with entries like:
City-Name, Country Standard Time: UTC+4:30 Daylight Savings Time: (UTC+4:30)
or did you have something more complex in mind?

Rainbow, Both links were interesting, thanks for that, but they did
not contain the correct info in a database type of format.
Fafalafa, Yes, that format is close to what I want, except that I need
to know when the DST starts and ends. Data doesn't have to be exactly
in a comma separated list, but it does need to be all in one page
(actually up to 5 pages is fine) that I can copy and edit very easily
to create a database.

I'm afraid the dates requirements really complicates things.
The DST dates are quite mercurial, changing year to year and in some
places -- most notably the US -- slated to change quite dramatically
as a new law has redefined DST dates, by extending the period of
daylight savings.
Sorry...but I don't think you're likely to get what you're asking for.

Pafalafa, I am willing to accept that the DST dates may change in the
future. I hope that any source found will also update themselves in
the future. Even if not, its better to have something now rather than
nothing ever :-)

Pafalafa-ga, Yep, it is tough. That is why I posted on google
answers :-) From the data shown, it doesn't seem to actually cover
"most major cities", as there are many more major cities in China than
just Beijing. However, I may accept this partial answer and release
the full payment depending on this question: How much the program
costs and if it is easy to extract the data of which you gave a
sample?

It's freeware!
It has just about all major cities in the world...China is some sort
of special case, since Bejing seems to be the only city with an
"official" time, even though the country spans numerous time zones.
Go figure!
Anyway, give it a try. The program is the World Time Explorer:
http://www.worldtimeexplorer.com/index.html
It downloaded cleanly for me, and passed all my spyware screens. It
was pretty easy to generate the cities list, though I don't have the
program in front of me at the moment, so I can't walk you through the
steps (it did take a bit of hunting around). If you have a problem
finding it, just let me know.
By the way, the author of the program strikes me as just the type of
person to offer up his assistance to anyone wanting to create, say, a
formatted list of cities. You might want to drop him an email.
Let me know how things go, and what else you need to make for a complete answer.
Cheers,
pafalafa-ga

Pafalafa, It seem that this discussion has all been classifed as
"clarification", so how do I mark this question as complete so that
you get credit?
