Me.... Bryan, I cannot positively confirm part of the information. I?ll explain. Graham Green (1904-1991) and Hugh Carlton Greene (1910-1987) were brothers. Both sons of Charles Henry Greene (1865 - 1942), one time assistant Headmaster at Berkhamsted School. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Greene http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Greene http://www.angelfire.com/journal/ggbtps/BerkhamstedSchool_2.htm His father was William Greene, of East Lodge, Bedford. I tried to trace him and his father?s 1881 census and came up with this one, but the problem is, the place of birth for Charles Henry does not match that provided in Who Was Who 1897-2005 so it may not be accurate. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_1659454&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=5 Sir Eric Edward Holt-Wilson (1875-1950) was the eldest son of late Rev. Thomas Holt-Wilson and Helen Emily, sister of late Sir E. Walter Greene (Who Was Who 1897-2005). Her family background is detailed under Number 320 on this page. ?+ 340 F iii. Helen Emily Greene was born in Sfk Eng and died on 25 Oct 1880. Helen married ²Rev. Thomas Holt Wilson³ on 13 Sep 1870 in Eng.? http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrisessex/Harris_chart.htm Her mother Emily married a Edward Greene on 4 Feb 1840 in Eng. Now whether Edward Greene is related to William Greene above I have been unable to ascertain. There must be a connection somewhere as the wikipedia article refers to the brewing concern and Sir E. Walter Greene is listed as a J.P. and Brewer on the 1881 census. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_1882027&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=5 Perhaps someone else can find the connection? In any event it appears the connection to Holt-Wilson is only by marriage. I?m away until Monday 0900. Perhaps someone else will solve the mystery. answerfinder-ga |

According to the Wikipedia entries mentioned by answerfinder-ga "Charles Henry Greene and Marion née Raymond, were first cousins". However, according to http://www.oxforddnb.com/ Charles Henry was married to "Marion Raymond (1872?1959), eldest daughter of the Revd Carleton Greene, and a distant relative of Robert Louis Stevenson". It would possible that the Sir Eric Edward Holt-Wilson is related to the Greene family via the branch of Marion Raymond Greene. Census 1881: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_1665823 Bryan, I could continue with the research tomorrow. |

According to http://www.oxforddnb.com/ i.e. R. G. Wilson, 'Greene family (per. 1801?1920)', Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/50414, accessed 4 Aug 2006] Benjamin Greene (1780?1860), son-in-law of Zachariah Carleton, had several sons, among them: John (1810?1867) Edward (1815?1891) and William (1824?1881). JOHN, solicitor, according to the 1851 census http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/census/uk/default.aspx was the father of Carlton (without "e"). According to the 1881 census Carleton was the father of Marion Raymond (mother of Graham and Hugh Carleton) http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_1665823 EDWARD: According to the 1851 census http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/census/uk/default.aspx Edward Greene was the father of Helen Emily (3 years old) (mother of Eric Edward Holt-Wilson, 1875-1950). Edward's household in the 1881 census: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_108472 WILLIAM had 9 children (according to the Oxford DNB), among them "Charles Henry Greene (1865?1942), headmaster of Berkhamsted School". |
