I have just learnt that a man, whose life I am studying, was taken to
this Fortress Military Hospital at the end of March/beginning of April
1918. e was a seriously wounded officer in the British Army at the
time. Please can you suggest where I might find out further
information about his stay there?

Dear keithh,

This is not an answer, only a comment. I'm afraid that finding further
information of the kind you desire will be very hard, if nor
impossible. Please let me explain the reason why:

The city of Mainz was located in the Grand-Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt,
but the fortress (which ceased to exist after WWI) belonged to the
Prussian army. All files of the Prussian military hospitals were
stored in the Army Archive in Potsdam. Unfortunately, most of those
files were destroyed in 1945. Only some documents survived WWII. Those
files are now kept by the German Federal Archive, Dept. MA (Military
Archive). A relatively large number of patients' files from the
Prussian military hospital still exists, but whether those you are
looking for are among them is not known to me. Therefore, I recommend
that you contact the Federal Archive:

Thank you very much for the response. I will write to them in the
next day or so. I am trying to trace anything I can about an officer,
Lt. FK Prideaux-Brune, who was with 6th Dragoon Guards and was wounded
on March 25 1918 near the railway to the west of
Abbecourt/Marest-Dampcourt. He moved from Bretigny to Abbecourt on
that day leading a dismounted detachment of combined Dragoons and
17th/21st Lancers. Cox and Co listed him in Mainz-Hessen (hence the
question). I have the war diary, but, of course, he was lost to the
regiment on detachment. I also have the PoW record. One thought is
to determine the French Regiment that he was supporting or the Geman
Regiment that captured him, but that may be along shot.
