Hello, I can answer this not from a domestic insurance point of view
but from a motor insurance point of view.

Would you accept advice from that perspective with information on
policy interpretation and current Insurer guidelines on satellite
navigation systems as accessories?

This is very much from the perspective of UK home contents insurance.
I have found that the vast majority of car insurance policies
explicitly exclude portable sat nav equipment.

Thanks
Ben

The answer is that in fact all household insurance policies should
cover the loss if you can show that it is not insured elsewhere....but
most household claims departments will refer you initially to your
motor insurer in case of loss and will probably deal with the claim
only if your motor insurer reject indemnity for the claim and
potentially they could even argue between themselves from the
perspective of dual insurance.

The problem is that there is currently a grey area over Sat Nav
systems because insurance companies don't keep their policy documents
as up to date with modern technologies as they should, things become
open to interpretation.

Most prudent insurers will class a satellite navigation system as an
accessory even though the strict definition of an accessory is
something "permanently attached to the vehicle".

The reason most prudent motor insurers will accept this as an
accessory is that most people use the sattelite navigation system that
they own in their primary insured vehicle. Also again most motor
insurers would only reject this if it was a portable sattelite
navigation system that had been left in the vehicle in view therefore
breaching the policy condition that requires an insured to "take all
reasonable precautions to secure the vehicle against theft, damage or
loss".

Of course any excesses or endorsements would apply and if its portable
remove it from the vehicle when not in use and also remove any sucker
marks from the inside of the window as theives are likely to break
into the car to see if you have stowed the Sat Nav in the glove box or
under the seat.

Since the answer that you have requested is specific to a list of
insurers that cover satellite navigation equipment, I have not posted
this question as an answer but if you will accept the same as an
answer or if with further clarification you will accept the answer I
will gladly post the same.

Thanks

Johnny Phoenix.
