You should agree. There are several articles you can refer to that describe the delicacy, and importance for proper adaptation, of the transition from high school to college. Examples are: http://www.humboldt.edu/~studaff/_download/parents_newsletter_archive/s2001.pdf And quoting http://www.quintcareers.com/first-year_success.html "According to American College Testing (ACT), one in every four college students leaves before completing their sophomore year - and nearly half of all freshmen will either drop out before obtaining a degree or complete their college education elsewhere." Other links that discuss the difficulties in transition to college: http://www.washington.edu/doit/Press/transition.html http://www.mstc.edu/highschooltransition.htm And quoting http://www.learnmoreindiana.org/publications/infoseries/txt/is-21.txt "Most students are excited about being on their own as they get ready for college. And along with the excitement, they sometimes feel anxious about the uncertainties they face." ... "One of the reasons freshmen may find college classes more challenging is that or the first time the responsibility for learning rests entirely on the student." |

Nelson -- I hope that this information from the Carleton College (Northfield, MN) "Family Guide" is helpful and not too tangential: "One theorist (Chickering) describes seven developmental tasks that challenge most college students ... general developmental tasks with double italics (below). Imporant Landmarks and Decisions: A Four-Year Developmental Checklist First Year ---------- * Separating from home, perhaps for the first time * Living with a roommate for the first time ** Developing competence (intellectual and social) ** Developing autonomy * Coming home again * Getting involved in co-curricular life * Choosing a new roommate for year 2 Second Year ------------ * Exploring off-campus study opportunities ** Managing emotions ** Establishing identity (sexual, social, etc.) * Choosing a major * Career exploration Best regards, Omnivorous-GA |
