How can I access a share on my windows 2003 server from my OSX Mac?

I have an internal network in this format. The server is on
192.168.1.100. It is a windows 2003 server and I have setup a share
on there called ?vaults?. I setup this share with access permission
for everyone.

How can I access it from the OSX (10.4 and 10.3.9) Macs on the network.

I tried this (on the mac)
In the menu bar I went to the Go menu and selected ?Connect to Server?
The I typed: smb://192.168.1.100/vaults

It then asked me for my domain, username, and password, which I entered.

But it comes back with the error message of: ?Cannot connect to the
server because the name or password is not correct?.

I tired setting up another share and that didn?t work either. I gave
myself full permissions to the share in both the permissions tab and
the NTFS security tab.

My 3 question are:

1 - How can I solve this problem when connecting from macs on the
internal network with SMB?

2 - Can I installed AFP (Apple file Protocol) on the windows 2003
server and connect macs to it that way? If so, where do I download
AFP for Windows Server 2003?

3- How can I connect to the server from Macs outside the network (from
the internet) in a relatively secure way (see below)?

I have a sonicwall firewall and can program it as needed. I assume
SMB runs on some port that I can map to the internal IP of the
computer. I also assume that leaving the SMB port open is very
unsecured. Are my assumptions correct? Is there a safe way to do
this? If there was a AFP for Windows server 2003 that I could
install on the server, would it be safe to leave this port open on the
firewall? Is it secure?

Thanx in advnce

To connect to a shared folder on a PC from a Mac, you first have to
make sure your pc has been named on the network. It is also a good
idea to make sure your user account has a pasword set.

To Do this, goto control panel, then click on the system icon. If you
have a computer name set, it should be displayed there (if you set a
computer name you may have to restart).

Once you have the computer name from your pc, goto your mac and ensure
windows file sharing has been enabled (not sure if theis is neccessary
but works for me).

Then goto the Go menu and select Connect to server. Then enter in
'smb://computer_name', where computer_name is the name of your pc on
the network.

This should prompt you to enter a username and password to access the
pc. Enter in your windows username and password and this should then
present you with a list of folders on your pc to choose from.

If this (above) fails, you may need to look at any firewall software
you are using and add the ip address of your mac to the trusted list
on your windows firewall software.

hope this helps!

It has a name.

as i mentioned in my post, i can reach it via IP and it prompts me to

Regardless of your computer running 2003, the method of connection
should be the same.

From your Mac, use the 2003 computer name to connect to the 2003 Server.

For Further guidance on connecting to a Windows Server, see the

I use a Mac as a daily machine, and I would try this list of desperate
handyman actions.

Open Console in the utilities folder. Then check the logs in
/var/log/samba/ for any abnormalities.

Otherwise, I would trying using a format similar to this
cifs://<WorkGroup>;<Username>@<Server Address>/<share> . Likewise, try
using cifs:// instead of smb:// . I am not sure if they have
diffrences.

For more troubleshooting, run the smbclient command in the terminal.
For reference, I used `smbclient -L <Server>` to check the listing of
shares. For more command line arguments, I would look at `man
smbclient` . Basically, if smbclient works, then it is a safe bet taht
the underlying samba system would work too and not a problem on the
server end.

Is the Windows 2003 Server machine set up as a domain controller? Do
you have a LDAP (active directory) service running?, do you have
windows machines in your nectwork which succesfully login to the
server?

Myself have the same setup. 30 windows clients, 6 mac clients. No
problems logging in, but there's no domain, no LDAP, BUT the macs must
be in the same workgroup of the windows server in order to be able to
connect without problems.. These settings are set within the Directory
Access application localted in the Utilities folder of the
Applications folder. Try this, you may be able to get in.
